Job Description

  • Under minimal supervision performs nuclear medicine procedures as requested by a physician to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Performs any combination of the following duties depending on the area of assignment. 
  • Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs nuclear medicine procedures by administering radiopharmaceuticals, IV and PO for concentration in specific areas of the body, under supervision of a physician. 
  • Performs imaging procedures of specific body areas by using gamma cameras and computer analysis.  Completes necessary documentation.
  • Cares for patients during procedures by assisting them to rest rooms, giving them blankets, etc. Prepares patients for their exams.
  • Reports changes in the patient's condition to others for follow-up.
  • Transports patients by stretcher, bed, wheelchair, or walking. 
  • Provides care for patients during transportation and in the department, if necessary.
  • Assists patients by lifting and moving them off and on imaging tables. 
  • Provides bedpans and urinals as needed. 
  • Assures that patients are properly dressed for their procedures.
  • Performs related duties such as reporting equipment malfunctions, assists others, and special assignments. 
  • Cleans work area and replenishes supplies.
  • Assists with emergency medical treatment under physician direction.
  • Assists with the scheduling of patient exams.
  • Attends regularly scheduled department meetings and in-services.
  • Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceutical materials and calculates doses.
  • Calibrates equipment.
  • Follows radiation safety techniques in use and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Develops, implements and assesses Continuous Performance Improvement efforts as assigned.



  • Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Training Program.
  • Licensure:  CTNM and BLS certificate are required.
  • Experience: At least one (1) year experience as a licensed technologist.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Knowledge of nuclear medicine equipment and radiation safety (patient and operator). 
  • The ability to perform patient injections and changing dressings requires the use of fine motor skills and precise hand/eye coordination.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, public and co-workers. 
  • Work requires ability to communicate effectively about complex matters with others who have varying levels of comprehension and knowledge, both oral and written.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: See attached “Physical Requirements Sheet”
  • Essential Mental Abilities: The ability to evaluate a patient’s condition such as respiratory, cardio-pulmonary or neuro, and be able to respond to changes due to radiopharmaceutical reactions.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements: Must be able to see, hear, verbally communicate and have tactile sense.
  • Performance Improvement: Assumes active role in the department’s Continuous Performance Improvement Program. 
  • Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Training Program.
  • CTNM and BLS certificate are required.

At least one (1) year experience as a licensed technologist.
